My guess is the drive is dead. Good thing you paid a premium for that hardware, eh? At least your machine still works. We had a Mac Mini at work that would just lock up when you put a CD in it. The best part was, it wouldn't ever boot back up, instead just hanging at the silver apple logo. Of course, there's no hard eject button on the slot-loading drives, so it had to be taken to the apple store. My guess is, yours will have to go in too.
